Week 6
I have always been aware of packet capturing tools basically
since I started working in IT. I’ve never had the chance (or if I’m being honest,
gumption) to use one, but I have heard that the data generated by one of those
applications can be quite eye-opening. Since it monitors each and every packet
that enters a network, the data can just start adding up… quick…
This week, we learned about flow analysis tools that still give you a lot of
the same insights into a network that a packet capture tool would, (I.E. When
and where packets are travelling to/from) but pared down so it is much more, I
don’t know, beginner friendly isn’t the right word.. Accessible maybe? Lower
barrier to entry?
Some software like this may be something you could keep running on a home lab
server just to monitor network stats for nerds like me without too much cause
for concern of filling up datastores.
